Community Support from Singapore Helps Equip Schoolgirls in Seychelles with Football Boots

The Seychelles Football Federation (SFF) has received a meaningful boost to its grassroots women’s football programme following a successful football boot donation initiative led by Chris Yip-Au, Head of Women’s Football, during her recent trip to Singapore.

Recognising a long-standing challenge faced by young female footballers in Seychelles, Chris reached out to the Singapore football community to request donations of football shoes for schoolgirls participating in the annual Secondary School Girls’ Football Tournament.

addressing a grassroots challenge

Each year, the tournament provides an important platform for young girls to engage in football, many for the first time. However, due to limited resources, a number of players do not own football boots and often take part in matches barefoot.

While the Federation continues to work within its means to ensure participation opportunities, access to proper footwear remains a significant barrier to player safety, confidence, and overall experience.

It’s not ideal, but we work with what we have,” Chris shared. “At the grassroots level, the goal is always to give girls the chance to play, and every small improvement makes a difference.

an overwhelming community response

The response from the Singapore community was both immediate and generous. Through individual contributions and word-of-mouth support, a total of **35 pairs of football boots** were collected during this trip alone.

Several of the donated boots have already been distributed to young players, giving them the opportunity to train and compete with proper equipment.

I’m incredibly grateful to everyone who contributed,” said Chris. “Your kindness has gone a long way in giving these girls a better and safer football experience.

more than just boots

Beyond the physical donation, the initiative highlights the power of cross-border community support and shared responsibility in developing women’s football.

Proper equipment not only improves performance and safety but also sends a strong message to young players that their participation matters and is valued.

looking ahead

While the donation drive has provided immediate relief, the need for sustained support remains. The Seychelles Football Federation continues to seek partners and sponsors who are passionate about contributing to the long-term growth of women’s football from grassroots participation to elite national teams.

If any organisations or individuals would like to support the women’s football programme in Seychelles, I would be more than happy to connect,” Chris added.

The Federation extends its sincere thanks to the Singapore community for their generosity and commitment to empowering young girls through football. Initiatives like this play a vital role in building inclusive pathways and a stronger future for the women’s game in Seychelles.
